A mystic abode of peace and tranquility sitting on the top of the hill is the biggest center of Buddhist learning in Spiti Valley, Key Monastery. It is over 1000yr old, overlooking Kaza from a height of around 13500 ft. The magnificent Key Monastery is believed to have been established by Dromtön (Brom-ston, 1008-1064 CE) who was a student of Atisha, a famous teacher of the 11th century.
Key monastery is around 14 km from Kaza. I walked that distance with my heavy rucksack to reach this heaven sitting on a hill surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Mostly I preferred walking if time permits irrespective of the distance as by walking I get to know the place and surroundings much better.
So after reaching monastery I inquired about the rooms to stay there. One of the Lama most probably the in-charge of rooms, gave me a form to fill and then he took me to my room. The room was really good and gave a sense of peacefulness. The washroom was on a shared basis and blankets were unlimited.

Lunch at Key Monastery
I got a plate, spoon, glass and a bowl to be used while having the food and had to take care of them, wash them. They need to be returned at the end of my stay. Now coming back to the story, after taking some rest, I went for lunch. It was my favourite “Rajma-Chawal” cooked in the same kitchen where the food for the monks is being cooked.
