Chitkul “In Winter”

A New Year plan to welcome 2018 in Chitkul village along with 2 other friends. As planned, we reached Sangla on 30th Dec 2017. Next morning we missed our bus to Raksham as one of us didn’t wake up on time. The next bus was after 4hrs at 12 p.m. also there was no share taxis, but we couldn’t wait for that long, so we start walking from Sangla to Chitkul and the distance was around 25km. At Raksham we took some rest and had our breakfast, Maggi and tea. Due to heavy snowfall the roads were becoming slippery as a result, we fell down a few times but we totally enjoyed it.

On our way we met some locals busy in their daily chores. We talked with them, played with their animals which was fun and many more things we did while going from Chitkul village to Sangla.

On reaching Chitkul Village, the next biggest task was to find a place to stay as it was freezing -10°C. Most of the guest houses were closed due to winter and rest were already occupied. Finally, after searching for hours one of us found a nice guest house. A room costed us ₹800/night. The guest house was operated by two youngsters who completed their graduation from DU and wanted to do their own work. They used to live nearby the guest house.

The day I enjoyed the most

After some rest we decided to go on a small trek in the meadows. Due to the recent snowfall meadows were totally covered in snow. The view there, oh god Chitkul looks like a wonderland in winters and you’ll be amazed to see the valley in snowy white color.

Party Begins

We reached our guest house around 05:30 p.m. after a small trek and the best part was yet to come “party”. Our host built a bonfire which went on till 01:00 at night.
There was music, alcohol, soft drinks and snacks at the party. Also, there were 3 other groups apart from us and we all were partying and enjoying the night together. At 10:00 p.m. we had our dinner and the party started again with dancing, singing and bonfire. It was the best New Year party of my life till today.
The night was magical with millions of stars and moon shining to their fullest. The valley was not less than a heaven on that night.

So we all started the counting 1.2.3…..10 and Happy New Year it is. We all wished each other. After sitting for a while everyone went to their room for much needed sleep as the temperature was very low -16°C.
Next morning we started our journey back to Delhi but this journey was incomplete without that trademark pic.
